TOP 5 EATS IN BERLIN (PLUS 1!)

March 11, 2018

Ok so it’s no secret I love to eat!  My favourite meal is breakfast, I would quite honestly eat it for every meal of the day (and have been known to!), so I’ve sought out some of Berlin’s finest (and also thrown in a couple of other meal establishments for those who don’t have the same pallete as me! So this would normally be one of my top 5 lists but another snuck it's way in because it was too good to miss so this list is 6!

I’m in the process of transitioning to a plant based style of eating (more about this in a blog to come soon!) so wherever possible I’ve tried to eat in this way and there were plant based options at all the places we ate.  I was however, travelling with Rob, who is a meat and 2 veg kinda guy so these places cater for all!

Best for brekkie and brunch

Rose Garden

By far my favourite for breakfast and brunch.  From the light and airy restaurant with different levels of seating and different areas it was aesthetically pleasing from the off! And then the food… Examples of the breakfast bowls are beautifully displayed on the counter, from Acai bowls and fruit and waffles to ‘almost’ bircher muesli and chia pudding you’re spoiled for choice.  I opted for the ‘Almost' bircher muesli topped with stewed apple and mix nuts and seeds and it kept me going for hours!  For those who want warm they serve eggs cooked your way on sourdough with a range of sides from avo to bacon, spinach and much more.  And then there’s the coffee- the best we found in town! It’s a must visit if you’re in Berlin. (if you stop by later in the day the prosecco is really reasonable too ;)

What do you fancy love?

See past the name and step inside!  More a smoothie and juice bar with coffee and a selection of pastries than a full breakfast joint but all freshly made and all yummy!  I went for the chia pudding with mixed fruit and it was a super generous portion prettily displayed in a glass jar full to the brim!  Add an oat milk latte and I’m a happy bunny,  There’s also a full menu of juices, smoothies and health shots to start your day in the right way!

Spreegold

Although they are open for breakfast we visited for lunch.  It’s super busy all day so book in advance if you don’t fancy waiting.  Best for the all day breakfast. From pancakes to smoothie bowls, breakfast stacks to eggs in a glass (I didn’t get it either!) you can eat breakfast right up to 6pm.

We opted for burgers!  I went for the veggie burger with sweet potato fries.  With a tomato salsa and stuffed with salad in a brioche bun it was filling ad tasted amazing!  For the meat lovers I have it on authority that it was a bangin’ bacon and cheese burger that was served up!

Best for Dinner

Tommi’s Burger Joint-

Blink and you’ll miss it, Tommi’s opened as a food truck in 2008 and grew so popular that it needed a permanent home.  Their no frills approach might be off putting but see through that and you’ll sample quite possibly the best burger in town.  The small menus are written in sharpie on cardboard box signs on the wall.  You can get a burger, beer and fried for about a tenner (the deal of the century apparently!) Be prepared to fight for a seat and also wait a while for your burger but the wait is worth it! Again with veggie and meat options, sweet potato fries and it’s a must not miss!

District MOT

Everywhere you turn in Berlin there is a Vietnamese restaurant, quite literally one on every corner and I have to admit we'd never tried Vietnamese food before so we decided to see what all the fuss was about!  District MOT is situated on a back street away from the beaten track. Flashing red lights and fake flowers adorn the walls of the canteen style restaurant.  The ethos is eat with chopsticks or just use your fingers.  Order from a huge selection of everything you can imagine and the food just keeps on coming!  I opted for a tofu burger in a green bun with tofu spring rolls.  The flavours were quite honestly out of this world. My meat eating husband went for the Chicken Satay and in his words it was the best satay sauce he’d ever experienced (this coming from a non foodie with quite a bland palette was high praise!)

Papa Pane

Just to prove we didn’t just survive on burgers while we were in Berlin I’ve added Papa Pane! In all honestly it was a bloody good meal. From fresh pizzas and pasta to meats and english dishes (yes really!) The food was freshly cooked and the restaurant was heaving. A dimly lit Italian restaurant (again booking is advised) may be a little off putting but the food was fresh, quick and very very tasty.  I went for my all time favourite pizza (mascarpone and spinach to be precise) and I struggled to finish it- unheard of for me and pizza! Rob opted for his favourite spaghetti carbonara and it didn’t disappoint in terms of size and flavour!

So a brief but tasty round up of where to eat in Berlin.  There was so much more we didn’t experience or try to I’d love to hear your recommendations.
