It's been around for a while now and the benefits are listed everywhere, but it's about time we appreciated the good stuff and used coconut oil to it's full potential.
So for all the newbies to this magical natural oil, here's a quick run down of what it actually is, and some tips for using it that you might not have known!
Coconut oil is extracted directly from the flesh of matured coconuts. More than 90% is formed from saturated fat. However, this saturated fat isn't as bad as we originally thought. It's not the same fat found in steak or cheese, but MCTs (medium chain fatty acids, essentially) which are metabolised differently by the body and used more efficiently.
The health benefits are endless; as are the uses, but here are some of my favourites:
I've been cooking with coconut oil for a few years now. Subbing other oils and spreads (even butter) and replacing them with coconut oil. Everything from eggs to mash taste amazing with a spoonful. My favourite way to use it is to dice sweet potatoes, sprinkle with cinnamon and pour on a little coconut oil, then roast for 40 minutes. Try it, it tastes amazing!
Bullet Proof Coffee
Try a teaspoon of coconut oil in your morning black coffee for an instant energy boost and a great way to start the day (maybe stick to 2 a day if you're sensitive to caffeine), best served on an empty stomach in the morning :)
Make up removal
This is hands down the best make up remover I've ever tired (and the cheapest!). Not only is it natural but it removes even the most stubborn waterproof mascara and leaves your skin feeling amazingly soft and smooth. Simply take a scoop of coconut oil and warm between your palms and apply to the face and eyes rubbing gently in circular motions and take a wet cotton pad to wipe off. I follow with my favourite face wash to get rid of the oily residue and have even eradicated the need for a heavy moisturiser on my face.
Another favourite use is as an overnight hair mask. I apply coconut oil to the ends of my hair before I go to sleep and wash it out on waking for super soft and shiny hair!
Again because of the fatty acids found in coconut oil, it's brilliant for the skin, helping keep it supple and well hydrated. It can be used everywhere from the lips as a balm to the body as a daily moisturiser and has been know to help skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis.
